Do Not Sell the Truth

Have you ever put a lot of work or effort into something only to see it collapse when you do not maintain it? I am so focused on meeting the needs of others that it is easy for me to neglect taking care of myself. I wanted my nails to grow longer and reach a certain length. I put effort into getting them in the shape that I wanted during the summer. However, when September rolled in and more responsibilities overtook my schedule, I did not have the same time to commit to their care. As a result, one after the other broke off and I found myself right back to some degree where I started. Maybe you experienced this with a project, maintaining a relationship, controlling weight, a Bible study, or something else in your life. You made a huge effort in the beginning, but as time progressed, you unintentionally slacked off.

A Warning

There is a warning in Proverbs 23:23 that I believe we should pay close attention to and put into practice. It states:

Proverbs 23:23

Buy the truth, and do not sell it,
Also wisdom and instruction and understanding.

This Scripture is not implying that truth, wisdom, instruction, or understanding can be purchased. This proverb encourages us, if we are to walk in truth, to intentionally obtain it (buy it) and to not give it up (sell it).

In other words, seek truth in your life and do not slack in having it operate fully and consistently in your life. The energy or effort to do so may seem you are paying a great price, but do it. Do not stop! Do what is necessary to not let truth slip away or leave you. In other words, “do not sell it.” The price you think you are paying is nothing compared to the riches of having God’s truth, wisdom, instruction and understanding guiding you daily. We should spare no pains to acquire them, but never surrender them for anything in this world.

Virtues Obtained Only by God

In reality, all of these can only be obtained from God and are His gracious gifts to us. Job lets us know how priceless they are, and there is nothing we can do to purchase them.

Job 28:12 – 19

But do people know where to find wisdom?
Where can they find understanding?
No one knows where to find it,
for it is not found among the living.
‘It is not here,’ says the ocean.
‘Nor is it here,’ says the sea.
It cannot be bought with gold.
It cannot be purchased with silver.
It’s worth more than all the gold of Ophir,
greater than precious onyx or lapis lazuli.
Wisdom is more valuable than gold and crystal.
It cannot be purchased with jewels mounted in fine gold.
Coral and jasper are worthless in trying to get it.
The price of wisdom is far above rubies.
Precious peridot from Ethiopia cannot be exchanged for it.
It’s worth more than the purest gold.

Do you understand what this is saying to us about these virtues? They cannot be brought. When obtained, there should be no attempt to sell (let go of) the truth along with these virtues. Yet, God is so loving to give them to us from His heavenly treasure chest if we ask and seek with all our heart; for they are found in Him alone. You must abandon truth in accordance with what you think and feel. It is of utmost importance that you cling to the truth that comes from the mouth of God (His Word).

Are you seriously seeking God in such a way that His truth, wisdom, instruction, and understanding overflow in your decisions, conversations, mindset, and conduct? Had you begun seeking, but somehow slacked off unintentionally? Have you let God’s truth slip away and have found yourself right back in some place where you started?

Conclusion

May we never abandon these precious treasures for anything the world has to offer. May our lives give proof daily that we value them just as our Savior when He walked upon the earth. The effort and time we give to them will provide eternal blessings and an intimacy with our Heavenly Father that is truly beyond any price. Again, my sisters, do not sell the truth along with the other virtues, but intentionally obtain them and do not give them up.
