A Psalm 55 Thanksgiving Prayer

(Maybe you can identify with these words written by David in this Psalm, especially since wickedness seems out of control presently. If so, following each portion of Scripture is a sample prayer of thanksgiving you can pray privately during this Thanksgiving season so you do not submit to negative emotions.)

Listen to my prayer, O God,
do not ignore my plea;
hear me and answer me.
My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught
because of what my enemy is saying,
because of the threats of the wicked;
for they bring down suffering on me
and assail me in their anger.

Thank You, Almighty God, for who You are and that You do not ignore my pleas but do answer my prayers. I thank You even more when my mind is troubled because of threats, wickedness, and suffering.

My heart is in anguish within me;
the terrors of death have fallen on me.
Fear and trembling have beset me;
horror has overwhelmed me.
I said, “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove!
I would fly away and be at rest.
I would flee far away
and stay in the desert;
I would hurry to my place of shelter,
far from the tempest and storm.”

Thank You, Father, for understanding when my heart is failing me, and I am full of fear and find myself trembling from the threat of death and present circumstances in this world. I confess that I just want to run away and hide. I do not want to deal with these storms. I would like to go far away from it all, until I remember that Your presence is always with me. Thank you for never leaving me.

Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words,
for I see violence and strife in the city.
Day and night they prowl about on its walls;
malice and abuse are within it.
Destructive forces are at work in the city;
threats and lies never leave its streets.
If an enemy were insulting me,
I could endure it;
if a foe were rising against me,
I could hide.
But it is you, a man like myself,
my companion, my close friend,
with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship
at the house of God,
as we walked about
among the worshipers.
Let death take my enemies by surprise;
let them go down alive to the realm of the dead,
for evil finds lodging among them.

Day and night evil destructive forces are at work in the city and sometimes in Your house, the church. There are times the magnitude of violence and strife confuses me when I observe it. Instead of my being confused, let them be confused (as David prayed) and deal with them for allowing evil to lodge among them. Let it lead them to Your Son, Jesus Christ. I pray for their salvation and their deliverance that is only possible in Your Son. Thank You for making a way for all to be saved.

As for me, I call to God,
and the LORD saves me.
Evening, morning and noon
I cry out in distress,
and he hears my voice.
He rescues me unharmed
from the battle waged against me,
even though many oppose me.
God, who is enthroned from of old,
who does not change—
he will hear them and humble them,
because they have no fear of God.

Oh, my Father in Heaven, each time I call to You, you rescue me. Thank you so much. It does not matter what time of day; I can cry out to You in my distress, and You hear my voice. It does not matter the size of the battle waged against me; You have a way of helping me to land on my feet unharmed. I anguish over them because they do not fear You and foolishly do not understand that You are The Creator enthroned in Heaven above all that is seen and unseen. They do not understand that one word from Your mouth is able to bring such humility that they will indeed one day declare Your sovereignty. Thank You that we never have to lose hope, for You have never lost a battle.

My companion attacks his friends;
he violates his covenant.
His talk is smooth as butter,
yet war is in his heart;
his words are more soothing than oil,
yet they are drawn swords.

Lord, You know there is even a deeper anguish of soul. It is when anyone I am close with hypocritically proclaims love, but only has hatred in their heart towards me or another. Despite the prevailing circumstances of racial and political division, please give me the continual capacity to love and not hate in return. Thank You for letting Your light shine through me so they may be restored and redeemed.

Cast your cares on the LORD
and he will sustain you;
he will never let
the righteous be shaken.
But you, God, will bring down the wicked
into the pit of decay;
the bloodthirsty and deceitful
will not live out half their days.
But as for me, I trust in you.

Precious Deliver, the wicked, bloodthirsty, and deceitful individuals are already defeated in Your sight. Let me not fret or worry about them or their evil actions. Instead, I will obediently cast all my cares upon You. You alone can sustain me and keep me from falling apart.

I acknowledge and thank You for the multitude of undeserved blessings You bestow upon me, my family, and my country each day. Apart from You we can do nor have nothing. From the time I was born, You have held me in Your arms and took care of me. You have been my front and rear guard. You know my needs and desires and display Your power in both. I cannot even begin to list all the ways Your grace and mercy have been extended towards me. The fun and challenging times have together been used by You to shape me into the image of Your Son. What a privilege to be so loved by You!

Thank You for being trustworthy, faithful, holy, and true. Therefore, I set my focus on You alone. This Thanksgiving and always, I will trust You, not be afraid, and walk by faith. Thank you, again, my Deliverer, Provider, Protector, and Friend. In addition, I would like to thank You for…
