Walk in Liberty

Psalm 119:45 KJV states, “And I will walk at liberty, for I seek Your precepts.” The New Living Translation states this same verse as, “I will walk in freedom, for I have devoted myself to your commandments.”

This month we reflect on liberty, because on July 4, 1776, the thirteen colonies claimed their independence or liberty from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States. Each year on July 4th, also known as Independence Day, we as Americans celebrate this historic event.

Who does not want liberty or freedom? Yet there is a liberty that goes beyond what we celebrate on July 4th. In Psalm 119:45, the Psalmist tells us how to walk or live in this liberty. It is by seeking or being devoted to God’s Word. By obeying His commandments, we experience this life of freedom.

True liberty cannot be experienced apart from God. We learn who God is through His commandments. I can sense that that word “commandments” speaks bondage and not freedom to some. Yet “commandments” is a reference to God’s Word written in the Bible. The more you know God’s Word and apply its truths to your life, the more you will know Him and experience freedom from the evil and corrupt bondage found in the world, Satan, and our own deceitful flesh.

There are some who would mock and say the Bible is not relevant for today. Its truths are ancient and not applicable to the issues we experience now. However, I must disagree! For God’s Word is still applicable more now than ever. There is no trouble that you can face today where God’s Word will not bring wisdom on how to deal with it.

If you have neglected the reading and studying of God’s Word, please take time this summer to begin reading a portion of God’s Word each day before you leave your home. If you will believe and trust what is written, you will begin to walk in liberty as never before.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people he chose for his inheritance.
From heaven the Lord looks down
and sees all mankind;
from his dwelling place he watches
all who live on earth—
he who forms the hearts of all,
who considers everything they do.
No king is saved by the size of his army;
no warrior escapes by his great strength.
A horse is a vain hope for deliverance;
despite all its great strength it cannot save.
But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him,
on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,
to deliver them from death
and keep them alive in famine.
We wait in hope for the Lord;
he is our help and our shield.
In him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in his holy name.
May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,
even as we put our hope in you. – Psalm 33:12-22
