We have just celebrated the day our Lord and Savior entered this earth to redeem lost humanity. Before His ascension back to His Heavenly home, He accomplished all that was necessary for all to be set free from the slavery and power of sin and Satan.
Galatians 5:1 states, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”
Do you see that? All believers are to stand in the liberty (freedom) that Christ has ALREADY established for us. And because we are already free, there is additional instruction to not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. So, we can conclude that each person is either living in freedom or bondage.
In the context of the Scripture, these individuals’ belief in Jesus had set them free from the bondage of the law and they were not to let anyone place them back into bondage through Judaism or any other philosophy of that time.
For several months William and I led a group of Christians in a study that was to help each one walk in the freedom Christ had already purchased for us. I realized for them and for me that it is easy to be entangled again with a yoke of bondage if we are not mindful and intentional to walk in our freedom established by Jesus. Do you think our Father knows what He is talking about when He gives us a warning? Duh!!
Now some may believe that freedom is a license to do whatever you want. That is not true! Freedom is the ability to live with and live for Jesus without all of the bondage and weight of our sinful flesh, sinful world, and sinful old master (Hebrews 12:1). Yes. Satan was our old master, but Jesus is our new Master. We should be obedient to Him and follow His commands only. This is a delight, because Jesus desires for us to have an abundant life. This is not true of Satan who wants to destroy us (John 10:10).
My heart’s cry for 2026 is that all of God’s children will stand in the freedom we already have and not be continuously entangled again by any sin.
Let me ask you some questions so you can begin to evaluate if you are walking in freedom or bondage.
Bondage can be spiritual, emotional, mental or physical. If you are not experiencing the freedom purchased for you, but are remaining in some type of bondage, please know that we have resources on our web site to encourage and build you up in your faith. You can even submit prayer requests by clicking here. The more you learn about and walk daily with Jesus, the more you will experience the freedom He has for you.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:1–3)
In this new year, may you experience more and more the freedom that Jesus freely gives to those who believe and trust in Him. After all, Jesus has already set us free. We just need to learn how to live in this freedom. Happy New Year!
