There are moments in one’s life when our faith is not as steady or strong as we would like it to be. We say we love the Lord and have experienced His goodness. We have seen His hand at work in our lives. But, when trials come and prayers seem unanswered, or circumstances become overwhelming, we may find ourselves facing a quiet but real crisis of belief.
If you have ever questioned, “Lord, where are You?” “Don’t you see that I’m struggling here?” or “What’s taking you so long?” you are not alone.
A crisis of belief often does not come suddenly. It develops over time. It can begin with disappointment, unanswered prayers, or situations that simply do not make sense. As we continue to walk through these trials in life, doubt can slowly creep in. But we can’t let doubt take us out. We have come too far by faith to let that happen.
That is why it is important to know that we all will face a crisis of belief sometime in our lives. Throughout Scripture, we see individuals who wrestled with their faith. Even strong believers, pastors, and teachers of God’s Word encounter this struggle. Yet, their struggles do not disqualify them, because God knows their hearts. These times prove to be an opportunity for them to go deeper in their trust in God. The truth is that faith requires action on our part and it will show what we believe about our God.
If you’ve ever found yourself in this place, I encourage you to reflect on how you approach these challenges. At the core of a crisis of belief is often a battle between what we see and what we know to be true. God’s Word tells us one thing, but our circumstances may appear to say another thing.
This is where the enemy attempts to plant seeds of doubt:
- “If God loves you, why is this happening?”
- “Why hasn’t your prayer been answered?”
- “Can you really trust Him?”
These thoughts are not new, yet they are powerful. A crisis of belief is not just about circumstances. It’s about what we choose to believe during those circumstances.
That is why Scripture reminds us in Romans 12:1-2 “I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
When Doubt Arises
When doubt arises, the answer is not to ignore it, but to confront it with truth. What does the Word say about the circumstances? What is the Holy Spirit saying to me? Spending time in the Scriptures allows us to realign our thinking with God’s promises rather than our emotions. Prayer is a way to talk to God about our crisis and get answers from Him.
Faith is not a feeling; it is a decision. It is choosing to trust God even when you do not understand what He is doing. As you renew your mind daily, you will begin to see your situation differently. Not because your circumstances have changed, but because your perspective has.
In the middle of a crisis of belief, it is easy to forget what God has already done.
Take a moment to reflect:
- Has He brought you through difficulties before? Yes!
- Has He provided when you needed it most? Yes!
- Has He shown Himself faithful in your past? Yes!
The same God who was with you then is with you now. He has not changed: the same yesterday, today, and will be tomorrow.
An Invitation From God
When the time came closer for me to retire from a job I had for many years, all I heard were reports of financial struggles. Thoughts of not receiving another paycheck and further income entered my mind off and on causing me to question the stability of our future. But I had to get my focus back on God’s Word and trust His promises to keep us and provide for us before doubt could take root. He has always been faithful to our family, and I know He will continue to do so. I just have to walk by faith and join Him in what He is doing to see His presence, provision, and power in my life.
What if your crisis of belief is an invitation from God for you to join Him in what He is doing?
An invitation to:
- Know Him more deeply!
- Trust Him more fully
- Depending on Him more completely
God does not waste our struggles. He uses them to refine our faith, strengthen our character, and draw us closer to Him. Instead of allowing doubt to pull you away, let it push or pressure you to move toward Him.
God is calling you higher. Because on the other side of a crisis of belief is a stronger, deeper, and more unshakable trust in our God.
