A Love That Reflects God’s Heart

I went into the store to purchase Mother Day cards for my three daughter-in-laws and suddenly felt a blanket of sadness come over me. Looking at all the cards that addressed moms made me face the reality again that my mother and mother-in-law, whom I loved very much, were no longer with us. They didn’t get to see the new grandbabies or witness the new events taking place within the family. Most of all, I would not get to squeeze them tight and express my love to them. I quickly had to regroup and begin thanking God for what I did have with three precious daughters-in-law that I can express my love to now. My tear-filled eyes gave way to a mouth of praise.

There is something uniquely powerful about the love of a mother. It is not passive. It is not distant. It is not conditional. A mother’s love protects, nurtures, corrects, and sacrifices, often without recognition and sometimes without rest. Whether through sleepless nights, whispered prayers, or quiet acts of service, her love becomes a covering over those entrusted to her care. But as beautiful as this love is, it is not the origin, it is the reflection. For a mother’s love reflects God’s heart.

From the very beginning, God designed motherhood not as a random assignment, but as a divinely orchestrated calling and one that reflects His own heart toward His children. In a world that often minimizes or distorts this role, we must return to the truth found in God’s Word. There is something deeply sacred about the role of a mother. Mothers were given a unique role to carry, to care, and to cover.

Matthew 23:37 states, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!”

What a precious picture of the gentle love of our Savior. He gave the picture of a mother hen to express how He would carry, care and cover Jerusalem if only they would let Him. Just as a mother gathers her children close in times of danger, God gathers us under His protection. The loving protection of a mother is one of the clearest earthly pictures we have of God’s heart toward His children. And when we begin to understand that connection, it not only transforms how we view motherhood, it transforms how we view God.

When women understand their God-given identity and purpose, they can walk in power, confidence, and transformation through His Word. Let’s explore this beautiful calling together.

1. To Carry: Assignment of Nurturing Life

Carrying is the first expression of motherhood. It is where life begins, where identity is formed, and where God begins knitting together purpose in the unseen. Psalm 139 reminds us that God forms every child in the womb, but He chooses a mother as the vessel through which that life is nurtured.

While pregnancy is the most obvious form of carrying, the calling goes deeper than the physical. Even if you have never carried a child physically, you may be carrying someone spiritually through prayer, mentorship, or encouragement. Now let’s be honest carrying is not always easy. It involves sacrifice, patience, and trust in God’s timing.

There are seasons when what you are carrying feels heavy. You may be carrying a prodigal child, a struggling relationship, or even your own emotional burdens. But here is the truth:

God never assigns you to carry something without also giving you the grace to sustain it.

2. To Care: Reflecting the Heart of God

Caring is the daily, often unseen expression of love that reflects the very nature of God. God’s love is not passive it is active, intentional, and sacrificial. In the same way, a mother’s care provides emotional security, builds confidence, and teaches values rooted in truth. Through care, mothers become instruments of God’s compassion. At its core, caring is ministry. Every time you comfort a hurting child, offer wisdom rooted in Scripture, show patience in difficult moments, you are doing the work of ministry. It is in the small moments, the meals prepared, the prayers whispered, the encouragement given that a mother’s influence is most deeply felt.

There are times when caring does feels draining. Caring for others can be exhausting. Many women today feel overwhelmed, unappreciated, or spiritually depleted. But here’s what God reminds us: You cannot pour from an empty vessel. This is why it’s essential to stay rooted in God’s Word (see the courses we offer), spend time in prayer, and surround yourself with encouragement.

3. To Cover: Doing Spiritual Warfare

Perhaps the most overlooked aspect of motherhood is the call to cover. Covering is spiritual. It involves protection, intercession, and standing in the gap for those God has entrusted to you. To cover means praying over your children and loved ones, speaking life and truth over them, and guarding their hearts and minds as best you can. It is both defensive and proactive. A mother who covers her family is engaging in spiritual warfare whether she realizes it or not.

There is no force more powerful than a mother who prays. Prayer breaks strongholds, brings clarity, and invites God’s presence into every situation. Covering is not a one-time act. It is a lifestyle that requires consistency in the quiet moments, in the middle of chaos, and in season of uncertainty. You understand that even when you don’t see immediate results, God is working behind the scenes.

These three roles of carrying, caring, and covering are not separate, but they are interconnected.

• You carry what God has entrusted to you
• You care for it as it grows
• You cover it through prayer and protection

When one area is neglected, the others are affected. But when all three are aligned, something powerful happens: You begin to walk fully in your God-given purpose as a woman of faith.

One of the most beautiful truths about motherhood is that its impact is generational. When you teach your children God’s Word, model faith in action, and demonstrate love and forgiveness, you are shaping not only their lives, but the lives they will influence.

Let’s be real, there are moments when you may feel inadequate to fulfill these roles.

“Am I doing enough?”
“Am I getting it right?”
“Am I failing as a mother?”

But here is the truth. Your sufficiency does not come from yourself it comes from God (2 Corinthians 3:5). God never expected perfection, He just desires surrender.

Whether you are:

• A new mother navigating uncertainty
• A seasoned mother guiding adult children
• A spiritual mother mentoring others

God is with you in every season, and through His Word, He equips you for every challenge. Motherhood is not something you have to figure out alone. God has already given you everything you need: His Word for guidance, His Spirit for strength, and His grace for every moment.

As you embrace your role to carry, care, and cover, you will begin to see the fruit of your obedience in ways you never imagined. Remember this as you go about your daily tasks. Motherhood is more than a role, it is a reflection of God’s character and heart.

• When you carry, you reflect His creativity
• When you care, you reflect His love
• When you cover, you reflect His protection

Whether you are a biological mother, spiritual mother, mentor, or caregiver, God has entrusted you with influence that shapes lives, generations, and destinies. Never underestimate the power of what God has entrusted to you. Your role matters. Your prayers matter. Your influence matters. And through Christ, your impact will reach far beyond what you can see.
