From the beginning of creation, there has been a spiritual battle between light and darkness. Although many focus only on what is happening naturally in the world, the Bible clearly reveals there is also a spiritual realm influencing humanity. Every person is part of either the kingdom of light or the kingdom of darkness. There is no middle ground.
As believers in Jesus Christ, we must understand this spiritual reality so we can walk victoriously, discern deception, and remain steadfast in our faith. The good news is that Jesus has already won the victory over darkness through His death and resurrection. We do not fight for victory—we fight from victory.
Today, many people are experiencing confusion, fear, anxiety, division, temptation, and hopelessness because the darkness of this world is increasing. Yet, God has called His people to shine brighter than ever before. Jesus declared: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12) What a powerful promise for every believer!
William and I had a wonderful opportunity to go to Italy for the month of May. It afforded us many new and exciting experiences. The beautiful home we stayed in had an open view of the sun glistening down on the Adriatic Sea each morning (see above). Truthfully, we could sit on the couch and fully observe the beauty of the sea behind the house all through the day. It became very obvious that the waves’ direction and height were directed by the wind. The waves were calm or furious in response to the wind. It was really something to observe day in and day out the impact of the wind upon the sea’s waves.
In this season of my life, I sense an urgent call from God to teach and bring a deeper understanding of His kingdom of light versus the kingdom of darkness ruled by Satan. This dark kingdom has blown over the nations as a strong wind stirring up furious waves of confusion and deception (similar to the wind’s effect upon the Adriatic Sea). I see clearly more than ever how we as God‘s children proudly proclaim and believe we are abiding in light when many times we open the door for darkness to enter unintentionally. Through Jesus, may we gain a clearer vision on seeing how His children (whom He died to set free) can become enslaved by darkness through mindsets, emotions, conversations, etc. allowed in our lives.
My heart aches over the subtle distractions and diversions the enemy has brought upon the children of light so they are not consistently alert to the traps of darkness Satan has set to ensnare them. I see how in my life and that of others he sets up situations to try to get us stuck in the kingdom of darkness that we were delivered from. I am not God nor do I have a desire to play the Holy Spirit in the lives of another individual. Yet there are times when I see someone suffering that I want to say to them, “Have you ever considered that thus and thus has opened the door of darkness into your life?” This is a hard thing to do because you never want to come off as if you’re sitting on a pedestal, looking down on anyone, and not everyone is willing to deal with blind spots in their lives.
I genuinely want to point out the two kingdoms and how Satan is trying to trap or keep us stuck in the very kingdom of darkness that Jesus delivered us from. May we obey the scriptures in Hebrews 12:1-2, “…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”
I will try to make a feeble attempt to express in words this level of spiritual battle that all of us are being called to wage at this present time. I humbly sound an alarm on this topic, for I will be sharing many things that I as a teacher have taught over the years. However, I am depending on the Holy Spirit, who alone can teach us deeper depths of understanding on this topic that is needed to live fully in this present time. I am concerned of someone reading these blogs and saying, “You’re not saying anything new. I’ve heard this over so many times before.” Yet my prayer is that somehow you will be given new eyes and new hearing from God above to evaluate for yourself where the kingdom of darkness may have gained entrance into your own life. Not for purposes of condemnation, guilt, or shame, but for the beautiful purpose of experiencing Jesus Christ all the more and the splendor of His kingdom of light.
I have prayerfully asked the Holy Spirit to give you new insight as you read the blogs for this month that you may emerge more powerful and more determined to defeat the realm of darkness in your own life and that of others who will allow you to walk with them. Bear with me as I go over some basic understanding of the two kingdoms.
What Is the Kingdom of Darkness?
The kingdom of darkness refers to Satan’s rule and influence over a fallen world system opposed to God. It operates through deception, sin, fear, pride, rebellion, confusion, hatred, and spiritual blindness.
Scripture tells us:
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world…” (Ephesians 6:12)
Many people fail to recognize that behind much of the chaos we see today is a spiritual battle. Satan desires to keep people bound in darkness and separated from God. He uses lies, distractions, temptation, and compromise to draw hearts away from truth.
The enemy especially attacks:
- Our Mind
- Our Identity
- Our Relationships
- Our Faith
- Our Purpose
- Our Living Out Biblical Truth
This is why renewing our minds through God’s Word is absolutely essential. As shared throughout Transformed Worldwide Ministries, transformation begins when our thinking aligns with God’s truth instead of the world’s deception.
There are believers who, not intentionally, allow darkness access into their lives through:
• Unforgiveness, holding grudges, prejudice
• Fear, anxiety, worrying, fretting
• Neglect of Bible study and prayer
• Pride, ego, selfish pursuits
• Criticism, blaming, complaining, inappropriate speech
• Occult practices, astronomy, astrology
• Toxic influences, isolation from other Christians
• Persistent sin, compromise, worldly desires
• Negative thought patterns, rejecting God’s truth
However, Jesus came to set captives (us) free from all of these.
Jesus Came to Destroy the Works of Darkness
One of the greatest truths in Scripture is that Jesus did not merely come to improve our lives—He came to rescue us from darkness entirely. Colossians 1:13 says:
“For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.”
Pause and reflect on that incredible truth. Believers are no longer prisoners of darkness. Through salvation, we have been transferred into God’s kingdom of light. The cross was the greatest victory in history.
When Jesus declared, “It is finished,” He defeated: sin, death, Satan’s authority, and spiritual bondage to darkness. This is why believers do not have to live defeated lives. If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior, darkness no longer has authority over you unless you surrender ground to it. That does not mean spiritual warfare disappears. It means we now have spiritual authority through Christ. This truth aligns beautifully with the encouragement shared in our blog, “Jesus Has Set Us Free“, which reminds believers that Christ has already broken the slavery and power of sin and Satan.
Characteristics of the Kingdom of Light
The kingdom of light reflects the nature and character of God Himself. Wherever God reigns, there is:
- Truth
- Peace
- Love
- Joy
- Holiness
- Freedom
- Healing
- Wisdom
- Hope
Walking in the light does not mean perfection. It means living surrendered to Jesus and allowing the Holy Spirit to continually transform (change) us. Galatians 5:22-23 describes the fruit of the Spirit which is produced in our lives when we live in the light of Jesus. This fruit (qualities) become evidence that we are walking in God’s light instead of the darkness of the world. Read this passage to see if this fruit is evident in your life.
In contrast, darkness produces confusion, fear, division, jealousy, bitterness, impurity, and destruction. One of Satan’s greatest strategies is counterfeiting light. Not everything that appears good is truly from God. This is why discernment is critically important in this generation. Believers must know the Word of God personally instead of depending solely on others for spiritual direction. I want to shed some light on areas of darkness that have almost become acceptable in the lives of Christians because they are the norm in our present world. By no means am I myself exempt from this light exposing my own behavior. My own thoughts, words, and behavior are under scrutiny that I may walk in the same freedom that I desire for you. In 2 Timothy 3:2-5 it states, “People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power.”
Christians often talk about representing the “kingdom of light,” a life shaped by love, truth, humility, justice, mercy, and holiness versus behaviors that reflect the “kingdom of darkness,” meaning patterns rooted in pride, deception, selfishness, cruelty, or spiritual compromise. Christians believe people still struggle with sin and would emphasize that this is not about perfection versus failure. The issue is whether someone is increasingly shaped by love, truth, humility, and repentance or increasingly shaped by pride, deception, selfishness, and hardness of heart.
Why Spiritual Discernment Matters More Than Ever
We are living in a time where darkness is increasingly normalized and biblical truth is often rejected. Good is called evil, and evil is called good. Many people are spiritually confused because they are relying on feelings instead of God’s Word. Discernment is the ability to recognize truth from error through the guidance of the Holy Spirit and Scripture.
Without discernment:
• Deception spreads easily
• False teachings influence believers
• Compromise becomes acceptable
• Spiritual confusion increases
Jesus warned repeatedly about deception in the last days. As Christians, we cannot afford spiritual complacency.
We must ask:
• Does this align with Scripture?
• Does this glorify Jesus?
• Does this produce godly fruit?
• Does this draw me closer to God or further away?

In reading this blog today, I trust that you realize all the more that the thoughts you entertain in your mind, the emotions that erupt from life‘s situations, and the way you interact with others will easily display if you are abiding in this kingdom of light. I trust you will refuse to remain in the realm of darkness that you were delivered from by our risen Savior. That as He was resurrected that you too will experience a resurrection in your life from death and the grave that wants to hold you. Be alert to experiencing confusion, fear, anxiety, division, temptation, and hopelessness because of the increasing darkness in this world. God has called you to shine brighter than ever before.
