Every day we are faced with choices and decisions that will affect everything we do. I was playing pickleball last week and every time I hit the ball I had to decide whether to hit a dink, speed up, lob down the line or center shot all in a matter of seconds. Life decisions happen quickly as well, so our foundation must be built on the rock that is higher than I (Jesus).
Every day we make hundreds of decisions. Some seem insignificant, like what to wear, what to eat, or how to spend our afternoon. Others shape the course of our lives, like whom we marry, where we work, how we raise our children, how we respond to conflict, and most importantly, whether we will follow God’s ways or our own.
The truth is simple: the choices we make today become the life we live tomorrow. Scripture repeatedly teaches that every decision carries consequences. Some bring life, peace, and blessings. Others lead to regret, heartache, and spiritual distance from God.
So how do we make decisions that honor God? Let’s look at several biblical principles that can transform the way we choose.
Every Choice Is a Seed
God designed life around the principle of sowing and reaping. Galatians 6:7 reminds us: “Whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.”
Every choice plants a seed.
- Choose forgiveness, and peace begins to grow.
- Choose bitterness, and resentment takes root.
- Choose truth, and trust is built.
Choose compromise and spiritual strength begins to weaken. Many people pray for different results while continuing to plant the same unhealthy seeds. God invites us to examine not just our circumstances, but the decisions producing those circumstances. This is why our daily choices matter far more than occasional big decisions.
God Gives Us Free Will—but Also Wisdom
One of God’s greatest gifts to humanity is the ability to choose. From the Garden of Eden until today, people have been given the freedom to obey or disobey. Moses challenged Israel in Deuteronomy 30:19: “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore, choose life.” Notice God didn’t force the choice. He invited them to choose wisely. The same invitation exists today. God never removes our responsibility to choose, but He faithfully provides His Word, His Holy Spirit, and wise counsel to help us make godly decisions.
Five Questions to Ask Before Making Any Major Decision
When facing an important decision, pause and prayerfully ask these questions.
1. Does God’s Word Support This Choice?
God will never lead us to violate His own Word. If Scripture clearly addresses an issue, the decision becomes much simpler. His Word serves as our compass in every season.
2. Have I Truly Prayed About It?
Prayer is not merely asking God to bless our plans. Prayer aligns our hearts with His. Sometimes we rush into decisions after only a brief prayer, hoping God approves. Instead, spend time listening. Allow peace to guide your spirit.
3. Am I Being Led by Peace or Pressure?
Many poor decisions are made because of pressure. Pressure from friends, family, finances, or fear should not guide us. God’s guidance is often accompanied by His peace. Colossians 3:15 tells us to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts. That doesn’t mean every decision feels easy. It means God’s peace remains even when circumstances are uncertain.
4. Will This Decision Help Me Become More Like Christ?
Every decision shapes our character.
Ask yourself:
- Will this strengthen my faith?
- Will it deepen my relationship with Jesus?
- Will it help me love others better?
- Will it honor God?
If the answer is yes, you’re likely moving in the right direction.
5. What Fruit Will This Produce?
Jesus taught that trees are known by their fruit. Before making any decision, imagine its harvest.
Will this produce:
- Peace?
- Joy?
- Integrity?
- Spiritual growth?
- Stronger relationships?
- Or will it produce confusion, compromise, or regret?
Wise people think beyond immediate gratification. They consider eternal impact.
Again, the choices we make today become the life we live tomorrow. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV) states, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Asking these five questions will assist in obeying this Scripture. In God’s love and grace, He gives us the ability to choose. May you and I do so with the wisdom that comes from above.
