Every morning we wake up new choices are before us. Walking in freedom isn’t a one-time event. Freedom requires us to make daily choices that align with God’s heart. It’s a daily decision just like daily bible reading, daily praying, and daily surrendering to His will for our lives.
Every morning we have a choice to:
- Believe God’s promises
- To forgive
- To trust
- To obey God’s Word
- To surrender our plans to God
Freedom grows through thousands of faithful choices. Small acts of obedience produce lasting spiritual maturity. The more we choose God’s ways, the more natural they become. The Scriptures teach us to grow in grace and knowledge of our Savior.
Today I walk in freedom because each day He gives me so much to hold on to and believe. When I reflect on my journey through college, the military, and then coming to Christ, what a relief to walk in the freedom only Jesus can give. It is amazing! I have so much to be thankful for: my wife, family, and friends like you.
Identifying What Keeps You Bound
Many Christians sincerely love Jesus while still struggling with areas of bondage. The Holy Spirit gently reveals these strongholds not to condemn us but to heal us. Some believers experience bondage through performance, believing they must earn God’s approval. Some are bound by fear and shame. Others by bitterness and some by comparison.
Psalm 139 reminds us to pray:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart.”
Freedom begins with honest surrender. We cannot give God what we’re unwilling to acknowledge or continue to hold on to. Second Corinthians 10 teaches that we are to cast down arguments and every thought that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. Notice that the battle isn’t primarily external, but internal. Every day we choose which voice we’ll believe or listen to. When temptation, discouragement, or doubt appears, God’s Word becomes our greatest weapon.
Jesus Himself responded to Satan’s temptations by declaring, “It is written…” (Matt. 4:4) If the Son of God relied on Scripture, how much more should we? God has put in His Book so many things for us to reference so we may live in freedom.
Walking in Freedom Means Walking by the Spirit
Freedom isn’t achieved through willpower. It’s produced through dependence on the Holy Spirit.
Galatians 5:16 reminds us:
“Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
The Holy Spirit empowers us to:
- Love unconditionally.
- Forgive completely.
- Exercise self-control.
- Walk in peace.
- Serve joyfully.
- Live victoriously.
The Holy Spirit empowers believers to live differently. He reminds us of God’s promises exactly when we need them. He convicts us, comforts, teaches, and strengthens us each day. The more closely we walk with Him, the more naturally we experience peace, patience, kindness, self-control, and every other fruit of the Spirit.
Freedom is never achieved through human effort alone. It is the result of daily dependence upon God. God never sets us free simply so we can feel better. He sets us free so we can fulfill His purpose on the earth. When we’re no longer consumed by fear, guilt, or shame, we are able to love others more freely. We become servants instead of spectators and disciple-makers instead of merely church attendees. Our testimony becomes one of God’s greatest tools for reaching others. People notice authentic freedom and are able to see peace in our lives that does not make sense to them. They are able to see we have joy during hardships because of our confidence in Christ. This is the kind of freedom the world desperately needs to witness.
The Christian life was never meant to be lived in bondage. Christ died so we could experience abundant life. That doesn’t mean life becomes easy. It means we no longer face life’s challenges alone. Every step taken in faith leads to greater freedom.
As we trust Him more completely in our daily choices, we will discover that His plans are truly better than our own. Praise God for this freedom only He can provide. It cannot be brought or earned but is a blessed gift from above.
